Postgame Recap (8/9/17) – D-backs 2, Dodgers 3: Another Close Game Goes to the Dodgers

It was a pitcher’s duel throughout, with neither team having many opportunities to score. Cody Bellinger took Zach Greinke deep for a home run to open up the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning. Greinke went on to strike out the side in the inning, but the damage was done.

Paul Goldschmidt answered back with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the 4th inning. That was only the second hit for the Diamondbacks in the game and it tied the score at 1-1.

With the exception of the two solo home runs, neither team was able to get more than one runner on base until the bottom of the 6th inning. That’s when the D-backs looked like they could open things up.

A.J. Pollock doubled with one out. After Paul Goldschmidt grounded out, J.D. Martinez singled to drive in Pollock. Ketel Marte followed with a sharp double but Martinez was unable to score. The inning ended with runners on first and second as Jake Lamb grounded out.

The Dodgers countered in the top of the 7th inning. Cody Bellinger opened the inning with a double and Greinke looked like he might get out of the inning. He got the next two batters out and was facing Joc Pederson who promptly doubled, scoring Bellinger and tying the game. Yasiel Puig singled to score Pederson and give the Dodgers the lead for good.

Stats that matter

  • Greinke looked great right up until the 7th inning – 6.2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 8 K, HR
  • J.D. Martinez was the only D-backs player with more than one hit – 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2B

Bottom line

It was a close game and both pitchers pitched well. Greinke was cruising along right up until that fateful 7th inning. It looked like he was going to escape but he just couldn’t get it done. A tough loss but not necessarily a bad loss.

On deck

The rubber game of the series is Thursday at 6:40 pm MT. Anthony Banda will take the hill for the D-backs.
