D-Backs Roster Update: RHP Matt Koch Recalled From Triple-A Reno (Updated)

Matt will fill Taijuan Walker's spot on the roster while he's on paternity leave.

We learned just moments before today’s game that Taijuan Walker had been scratched from his scheduled start today and placed on paternity leave. Walker’s wife went into labor last night with their first child but there’s still no news on her progress.

In his stead, Patrick Corbin pitched one heck of a gem today and led the D-backs to a solid 12-2 win over the Reds (recap here). In addition, the D-backs have recalled RHP Matt Koch from Triple-A Reno to fill the opening on the roster.

Koch made his major-league debut in 2016 for the D-backs starting two games and pitching five games in relief. He ended up with a 1-1 record and a 2.00 ERA over 18.0 innings pitched for Arizona. He’s 2-1 in six minor league starts this season between Hillsboro and Reno, including 18 strikeouts over 28 innings pitched.

It’s possible the D-backs slot him into a spot start as early as Saturday. That assumes the D-backs move Zack Godley up to start on Friday since he’ll have had five days off, and that they avoid moving Robbie Ray up to Saturday since he’ll have had only four days rest. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Update: The D-backs just announced that Zack Godley will indeed start on Friday in the series opener against the Washington Nationals. Saturday starter is still TBD.
